Bronze, dark patina with green nuances. Sign. ' 'Roger Godchaux', bez. 'cire perdue' , Sign. by the foundry 'Susse Fr(èr)es Ed(i)t(eur)s Paris' and round stamp by the foundry. H. 25 cm, L. 34 cm, B. 17 cm. - Provenance: In private ownership for over 40 years. - Godchaux counts among the great animal sculptors of the 1st half of the 20th century, the so-called 'Animaliers'. After his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, he specialized in animal sculptures under the influence of the animal bronzes of Antoine-Louis Barye. From 1905 he exhibited regularly in the Salon of French artists. In 1925 he won the silver medal at the "Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes". Godchaux became famous especially for his bronze elephant sculptures. Lit.:
