Iwan Konstantinowitsch Aiwasowskij (Feodosija 1817 - Feodosija 1900) - Artist


Russian marine painter, studied at the St. Petersburg academy 1833-37, was decorated with gold medals as early as 1833-37, 1840-44 he lived in Italy where he met W. Turner a. from where he travelled Western Europe, after his return he became painter of the marine ministry, in 1847 was made professor of the St. Petersburg academy, in 1851 he accompanied the Tsar to maneouvres of the Black Sea Fleet. Departing from a romantic tradition he developed a realist-pathetic painting that is among the best achievements of marine painting. Mus.: Moskau (Tretjakow-Gal.), St. Petersburg (Russ.
