German painter and graphic artist, a leading representative of German Expressionism. After an apprenticeship as a lithographer, he studied at the Dresden Academy from 1896, and in 1898 he transferred to the Munich Academy, where, however, the director F. von Stuck refused to allow him to continue his studies in 1899. In 1908 he settled in Berlin, where in 1910 he was one of the co-founders of the Neue Secession. Since then he also exhibited together with the 'Brücke'. In 1919 he accepted a professorship in Breslau. The National Socialists defamed him as 'degenerate' and had many of his works removed from museums.
