A small bronze bust of a Roman Emperor

Lot-No. 333

Proceeds : 600 €

Northern Italy, probably Venice, 16/17th cent. Bronze with remains of black laquer, h. 24 cm. - The bust clearly depicts Julius Caesar despite the engraving 'Vitelus', the name of the so-called soldier emperor Vitellius. Probably it was part of a series of emperor busts made for a 'studiolo' whereby the artist worked on base of an ancient original, but without a correct reference. - Literature: Comp. a highly similar portrait bust in: Exh. cat. Italienische Kleinplastiken, Zeichnungen und Musik der Renaissance, Waffen des 16. und 17. Jh., Schloss Schallaburg, 1976, cat. no. 44. - Provenance: Private collection, Lower Saxony.
