E. studied graphic arts at the Berlin Hochschule für Bildende Künste since 1924. In 1926 he moved to Paris where he continued his studies at the Académie Ranson a. became master student of R. Bissiére in 1928. In 1947 he became French citizen. Since 1966 he taught at the Frankurt Städel painting school.
