W. studied at the Hamburg Landeskunstschule under E. Steinbach a. A. Ehrhardt. He was member of the 'Gruppe 45', a. made friends with T. Tügel a. H. Stegemann. His early expressionist abstract work is located in the tradition of the Hamburg secession. Since the 1950s he developed variants of abstraction influenced by Klee, Manessier a.
