Oil/canvas, 31 x 25,5 cm, lo. ri. sign. Josef Israels, min. Craquelé. - Dutch painter a. graphik artist, one of the main exponents of the Hague painting school. He was taught drawing in Groningen before studying painting in the studio of J. A. Krusemann since 1840. At the same time he took evening lessons under J. W. Pienemann at the Amsterdam academy. Unsatisfied by academic lessons in Amsterdam he went to Paris, accompanied by J. van Koningsveld, a. studied under J. Pradier, H. Vernet a. P. Delaroche. In 1847 he returned to Amsterdam a. developed into one of the leading history painters of his time. Since the mid 1850s he turned to subjects from the life of fishermen, a. the expression of mental impulses became most important. Some of his later paintings remind of Rembrandt in their immediatness, in their light a. colour. - Mus.: Amsterdam (Rijksmus., Stedelijk Mus.), London (Nat.
