Jozef Israels (Groningen 1824 - Den Haag 1911) - Artist
Dutch painter and graphic artist, one of the main exponents of the Hague painting school. He was taught drawing in Groningen before studying painting in the studio of J. A. Krusemann since 1840. At the same time he took evening lessons under J. W. Pienemann at the Amsterdam academy. Unsatisfied by academic lessons in Amsterdam he went to Paris, accompanied by J. van Koningsveld, where they studied under J. Pradier, H. Vernet and P. Delaroche. In 1847 I. returned to Amsterdam and developed into one of the leading history painters of his time. Since the mid 1850s he turned to subjects from the life of fishermen, and the expression of mental impulses became most important. Some of his later paintings remind of Rembrandt in their immediatness, in their light and colour. Mus.: Amsterdam (Rijksmus., Stedelijk Mus.), London (Nat. Gall.), The Hague a. others. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit, Scheen a. others.
