Strasbourg, 19th cent. A magnificent amphora vase with cover and 2 side mascaron handles on a square-cut base. Both sides with finely painted, gold-framed reserves on a burgundy-red underground: Historical scenes from the Saxo-German history. Inscribed 'Vortigern und Rowena' and 'Hermann der Cherusker'. The base with mythological scenes from the life of Venus. Manufactory mark. H. 74. - The depiction of Vortigern and his spouse Rowena is definitely inspired by an etching of Angelika Kaufmann, which was published in 1858's 'The Pictorial History of England'.
