On the reverse estate stamp with no. 106 as well as titled by another hand and dated 1913. - Literature: Catalogue raisoné: Heiderich 1941 - Provenance: Private collection Baden-Württemberg - A German painter who, during his brief artistic career, created one of the most significant works of Expressionism. M. dropped out of high school in 1904 to study at the Düsseldorf Academy against his parents’ wishes, but left the academy as early as 1906 because of its academic teaching methods. Deeply impressed by the Impressionists during a trip to Paris in 1908, he took lessons from L. Corinth. In 1910, he became friends with F. Marc in Munich. In 1911 and 1912, he participated in the first two exhibitions of the 'Blauer Reiter' while also helping to organize avant-garde exhibitions in the Rhineland and Berlin. In early 1914, he undertook the now-famous study trip to Tunisia with P. Klee and L. Moilliet; in the fall of that same year, he was killed in action in Champagne. After numerous experiments with various modernist movements, he developed a style characterized by strong effects of light, vibrant colors, and harmonious composition. Mus.: Madrid (Mus.
