K. studied in Berlin under H. Eschke, C. Steffeck, and G. Biermann. He initially undertook extensive travels throughout Europe, and from 1873 onward also to Egypt, Palestine, and Constantinople. He specialized in Oriental motifs, particularly those from Egypt, with which he achieved his greatest success. He attained unrivaled mastery in rendering the subtlest variations in weather and atmosphere throughout the day. In 1894, he became a professor in Berlin.
