Around 1930. Bronze, dark patinated. H. 14 x 26 x 11 cm. Signed Roger Godchaux, foundry mark SUSSE FRERES EDITEURS PARIS. The masterful depiction of the elegantly striding lioness shows the big cat in a light walking motion, turned to the side, with ears pricked and a bold gaze - Godchaux counts among the great animal sculptors of the 1st half of the 20th century, the so-called 'Animaliers'. After his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, he specialized in animal sculptures under the influence of the animal bronzes of Antoine-Louis Barye. From 1905 he exhibited regularly in the Salon of French artists. In 1925 he won the silver medal at the 'Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes'. Godchaux became famous especially for his bronze elephant sculptures.

Vita:
Godchaux counts among the great animal sculptors of the 1st half of the 20th century, the so-called 'Animaliers'. After his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, he specialized in animal sculptures under the influence of the animal bronzes of Antoine-Louis Barye. From 1905 he exhibited regularly in the Salon of French artists. In 1925 he won the silver medal at the 'Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes'. Godchaux became famous especially for his bronze elephant sculptures.
