Heisig at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig from 1977-82. 1985-97 she worked in Hamburg and held various teaching positions there. In 1997 she settled in Leipzig. She continued to teach in Hamburg, at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle and in Dresden. Since 2006 she has been a professor at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig.
