T. had already published as a photographer before he studied in Bournemouth in 1990-92. He then moved to London, and later to Hamburg and New York. T. held professorships in Hamburg and Frankfurt. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and was the first photographer ever to win the Turner Prize.
