André Lhote (Bordeaux 1885 - Paris 1962) - Sell & Buy

French painter, art theorist and influential figure of Cubism. L. studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux from 1898 to 1906 and later turned full-time to painting. His early work is heavily influenced by Cézanne and the Fauves. From 1910, he joined the Cubist circle in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. L. developed a moderate, structured variant of the style that maintained objectivity and order. His works combine clear geometry with harmonious color compositions, with landscapes and the human body being the central subjects of his depictions. In addition to his artistic practice, L. was an influential teacher and attracted numerous international students. In 1925 he founded his own academy 'L'Académie André Lhote', which existed until his death. His students include Tamara de Lempicka, Hans Hartung, Wu Guanzhong and Louise Bourgeois. L. published art theoretical writings in which he emphasized compositions, rhythm and 'constructive' image thinking. He did not see cubism as a radical break but as a further development of classical pictorial principles. Mus.: Paris (Musée d'Art Moderne, Center Pompidou), Bordeaux (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Chicago (Art Institute) and others. Lit.: Thieme Becker, Vollmer
