Auguste Renoir (Limoges 1841 - Cagnes-sur-Mer 1919) - Artist
R. is one of the most important and highly regarded representatives of French Impressionism. R. trained as a porcelain painter and then received lessons from Ch. Gleyre. Soon he joined progressive artist circles around Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet and Alfred Sisley. In 1864 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon, later also with the Impressionists. He earned his living with portrait commissions. Throughout his life, the artist continued to develop his style; his constant tendency towards lively motifs and bright colours ensure his unbroken popularity. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit a. others.
