Johann Wilhelm Cordes (Lübeck 1824 - Lübeck 1869) - Sell & Buy
German landscape painter. After commercial training, C. studied at the academies in Prague and Düsseldorf. There he was probably also a private student of J. W. Schirmer. C. traveled mainly in Northern Europe and worked in many German cities. In 1860 he settled in Weimar at the invitation of the Grand Duke Carl Alexander, but he declined a position as a teacher at the art school. In the same year he became an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy, and the tsar acquired one of his paintings. Mus.: St. Petersburg (Hermitage), Hamburg (Kunsthalle), Lubeck a. others.
