German painter. F. attended evening classes at the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts from 1933-37, his teacher was Max Kaus. He was severely harassed by the National Socialists and banned from working in 1943. After the war, he initially worked as a freelancer. In 1952, Heinrich Ehmsen accepted him as a master student at the Academy of Arts. F. moved to the GDR in 1953, where he was a professor in Greifswald and Berlin from 1962-1983.
