Hamburg landscape painter. U. studied at the Weimar Art School under S. von Kalckreuth from 1860-70, then in Munich until 1873. He opened a painting school in Dresden, then lived in London until 1879, before returning to Hamburg. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Der Neue Rump.
