S. is one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Like his father, S. initially worked in the mining industry and came to photography via detours. In 1910, he set up his own photo studio in Cologne and made contact with leading contemporary artists. This period also saw the beginning of his decades-long work on the epoch-making major work 'People of the 20th Century'. His photographs have been exhibited in the world's most important museums, including the MoMA in New York, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
