South African painter and assemblage artist, one of the important avant-gardists of his country. C. studied at the University of Witwatersrand until 1951. Thanks to a scholarship he was then able to continue his studies at the Slade School in London. With further scholarships he lived in Italy, Paris and Japan in the following years.
