German painter and illustrator. D. studied at the Dresden Academy under K. von Piloty from 1844. In 1849-55 he worked as an illustrator in New York. He then worked as a costume designer at the Weimar Theater and was a professor in Berlin from 1870. Mus.: Weimar, Vienna. Lit.: AKL.
