English soldier and explorer. Like his father, R. pursued a military career. He first served in Burma from 1858 and was already interested in local culture and society there; his talent for drawing was very useful to him. In 1863 he was sent to New Zealand and began documenting Maori culture, among it tattoos. He also had a collection of preserved Maori heads. In 1847 he quit the army and published the knowledge he had acquired in and about New Zealand.
