German sculptor and painter. Education at the Kunstgewerbeschule Nuremberg (1890-1894), 1894 entry into the sculpture class of Wilhelm von Rümann at the Kgl. Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, 1907 own workshop in Munich. - Mattes and his famous contemporary Franz von Stuck were representants of the Symbolism. He then went to the religious sculptural art and created numerous works for churches in Munich, also he produced fountains, reliefs, war memorials, busts and nude figures.
