French painter, graphic artist and sculptor, next to Picasso the most important artist of Classical Modernism. M. initially enrolled in law, but studied from 1891 in Paris at the Académie Julian, then n the École des Beaux-Arts. Together with A. Derain and M. Vlaminck, M. created the style soon to be called Fauvism, which brought him his breakthrough with the 1905 Salon exhibition. The Académie Matisse, founded in 1908, had an enormous influence on the artistic development of students from all over Europe. Color has a paramount place with M. more than with other artists of his generations. He frees it from the local color of objects or their volumes. In combination with an ingenious feeling for surface and ornament, M. made groundbreaking contributions to the development of 20th century art. He was the only artist Picasso recognized as his equal.
