French portrait painter. V. was pupil of A.-L. Girodet-Trioson. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1817 a. 1848. By the early 1830s he moved to USA where he became the leading portrait painter of New Orleans. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit.
