American painter. M. studied at the Connecticut Art Students League, where she met her future husband, Milton Avery. In 1930s New York, she formed friendships with artists such as Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb and Barnet Newman. Through regular exchanges within artistic circles on the perception of art and the effect of colour, the artist couple jointly developed what would become known as the ‘Avery style’, a synthesis of abstraction and realism.
