Danish landscape, portrait and figure painter. H. studied 1870-77 at the Copenhagen academy, thereafter he continued his training under L. Bonnat in Paris. In 1880 he became professor at the Copenhagen academy. Besides his brother Erik he is among the most important naturalist Danish painters. Mus.: Copenhagen, Aarhus a. others.
