A Rare Double Sculpture of a Renaissance Figure Fountain

Lot-No. 398 | Proceeds: 7.600,00 €

Harz Mountains, 16th cent. Fullround carved wood with polychrome coloring. The front side is depicting a 'Wild Man', wearing a loincloth and wreath of leaves, on the reverse a 'Wild Woman' with naked torso, pearl jewellery and diadem. Intended for fountains. H. 157 cm. - Since ancient times the figures of 'Wild Man and Wild Woman' are favourite objects in literature and metaphorical depictions. Even in the legends and fairy-tales of Harz mountains the Wild Man has an important role for example during the founding history of the City of Wildemann, a mining town in Upper Harz. -
