Oil/canvas, 54 x 43 cm, min. rest. relined. - Provenance: Private collection Hamburg. - The most important painter from the well-known artist's dynasty, the best German portrait painter of the 18th cent. T. was taught painting by his father and his uncle Johann Heinrich Tischbein, the so called 'Kassel Tischbein', since 1772 he worked in the studio of J. G. Wille in Paris. He was painter to several courts before being made head of the Leipzig academy in 1800 from where he got his surname 'Leipzig Tischbein'.
