Japan, late Edo-period (1603 - 1868). Gilt-lacquered wood. Sitting in 'padmasana' on a separate carved lotus base in front of a halo, the hands in 'dhyana-mudra', the gesture of meditation. Magnificent, multilevel lotus base. Partly small dam. due to age. Overall height h. 119 cm, buddha h. 35 cm. - Provenance: 1989 (sale 640, lot 415) acquired at Kunsthaus Lempertz; private collection Northern Germany.
