A. began studying in Berlin before he continued his studies on recommandation of L. von Lütgendorff in Munich under H. von Habermann. Since 1919 he taught at the Kassel arts and crafts school where he became professor in 1923. After working also in Berlin a. on Sylt he returned to Lübeck in 1959.
