Hamburg, mid. of 19th cent. Centerpiece in silver, partly gilded and stamped with Hamburg city mark with E or F, executing mark: 'B&G' for Brahmfeld & Gutruf, Hamburg. Engravings of designer and executing: 'erfund. & gez. von H. Soltau' for H.W. Soltau (Hamburg Painter and Designer. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Der Neue Rump, et.al.), 'ausgeführt von Q. von Holten', for the executed silver smith (prob. a descendant from the Hamburg silver smith family of Johann von Holten I), 'aus d. Fabrik v. Brahmfeld & Gutruf'. Ebonized wooden base and glass cover. Centerpiece H. 35 cm, w. without candelarms 31,5 cm, h. with glass cover 59 cm. - We thank Mrs. Dr. Horbas from Hamburg Museum for her kind support. - Architecturally designed writing centerpiece, 3 sides framed by a jour worked arabesques, phoenix and dragons as well as with 2 moveable mounted candelarms. Back panel with relief 'Wohldorfer Herrenhaus', framed by two panels with engraved names of 38 Hamburg citizens. Central engraved date ' 1832 December 13 1857'. On top with relief 'Altes Hamburger Rathaus' at the Trostbrücke. Base worked as a book with drawer, on top with silvermounted ink and scattering sand flacons, table bell with blackamoor as well as with paper knife in shape of Mercury's staff. - This writing centerpiece is an outstanding honor or anniversary gift that was made for a famous Hamburger citizen from the middle of the 19th century. The engraved names includes important Hamburger senators and members of the Hamburg Parliament, Chamber of Commerce President, merchants and bankers of the 19th century. Donors and donee are not known. But this techniqually and symbolically outstanding-worked anniversary writing centerpiece must be honored to an important Hamburger personality from the mid-19th century.
