Like his father he became musician before studying at the Prague academy since 1886. In 1888 he moved to Munich, later he became a student of the Städel school in Frankfurt. The duke of Hassia provided him with a studio in Darmstadt in 1907, but in 1910 H. returned to his native town before settling definitely in Munich.
