An archaic lidded bronze vessel 'Gui'

China, Warring States Period (475-221 BC). Partly green patinated bronze. Slightly compressed globular form on three short curved feet. The body adorned in the lower area with a decoration band filled with interlocked swirling ornaments, expanded by a jagged border below. The decoration band is repeated under the strong lip and separated from the lower area by a ridge. The lid is decorated in a similar manner with two horizontal ornamental borders. Cover and body additionally adorned with ring handles. Very min. rest. H. 19 cm, diam. 27 cm. - This vessel type was used for ritual food and originated in the Shang Dynasty. The decoration can be also found on other types, like on a 'Ding' in the collection of the Musée des Arts Asiatiques Guimet (in the catalogue Musée des Arts Asiatiques Guimet: Trésors de la Chine ancienne, Paris, 2013, p. 14, pic. 2 und p. 17.
