Ca. 1800, pastel/parchment, 34 x 28 cm, lo. ri. indistinctly inscribed, framed under glass, uninspected out of frame. - We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for identifying the artist. - German portrait painter, the best German pastel painter since A. R. Mengs. S. was pupil of J. H. Tischbein in Kassel. After travelling England a. the Netherlands he worked at different German courts before becoming painter to the court in Brunswick in 1785, later in Baden. - Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Braunschweig (Herzog-Anton-August-Mus.), Weimar u.a. - Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, 2006.
