China, around 1749. Porcelain with grisaille painting and sumptuous gold decoration. In the centre a large coat of arms with pelican surrounded by a circular inscription (("Ter Gedagtenis van Harmannus Laurents Discher Hooft van Commissarissen en Prauw-Voerders op Batavia Ao. 1749"). The rim with flowering branches underneath a fine ornamental border. Small chips and fine fissure to the rim. Diam. 23,5 cm. - The mentioned service was commissioned for the East Frisean born Discher, who played an important role in the Dutch colony of Batavia under governor-general Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff. Other plates from this service are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and the Musée National de Céramique, Sèvres.
