Meissen, around 1780. Each piece with a gold- and oak leaf-framed painting reserve. Inside scenes from the fables of Jean de La Fontaine. Each fable named seperately. 24 parts: Coffee pot (h. 23,5 cm, rose pommel with min. chip), tea pot (h. 11 cm), milk pot (h. 15 cm), 6 cups, 12 small plates (diam. 13,5 cm, 1 plate with min. chip to the rim), bowl (diam. 16,5 cm), quatrefoil-bowl (13,5 x 17,5 cm), ovoid tea caddy. Crossed swords in u"glaze blue with star ("Marcolini-period"). - Jean de La Fontaine"s fables were first published in 1668. Several sequences of engravings made them popular throughout Europe at the beginning of the 18th cent. The artistic depiction in the present service is inspired by a famous series of fable-engravings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Another Meissen service with fables by La Fontaine is in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland (Castle Alnwick).
