Kessler studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig from 1982-88, most recently as a master student of Ben Willikens; shortly afterwards he received a teaching position at his university. He has received several scholarships, including from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and for the Villa Romana. The artist lives and works in Detmold.
