P. is one of the formative figures of West German post-war art. After training as a glass painter, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Karl Otto Götz and G. Hoehme from 1961-67. Under the slogan of 'Capitalist Realism', P. founded an artists' group in 1963 with other artists, including Gerhard Richter. In 1977-91 P. was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, after which he settled in Cologne. He was a particularly versatile and versatile artist. Thus, on the one hand, there are works as highly reflective commentaries on art history and the mechanisms of the art market, on the other hand, the major commission to design the church windows in Zurich's Grossmünster.
