P. is one of the formative figures of West German post-war art. After training as a glass painter, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Karl Otto Götz and G. Hoehme from 1961-67. Under the slogan of 'Capitalist Realism', P. founded an artists' group in 1963 with other artists, including Gerhard Richter. In 1977-91 P. was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, after which he settled in Cologne. He was a particularly versatile and versatile artist.
