Early 20th century. Bronze, brown patinated. H. 54.5 cm, stone base: H. 3 cm. Signed H. LEDERER, foundry stamp Akt. Ges. v. H. Gladenbeck and son. Patina on shoulder and head slightly rubbed, stone base minimally chipped. The model for Gladenbeck's version was the large sculpture of the fencer created in 1901/04 for the so-called 'Fencer's Fountain' on the University Square in Breslau - German sculptor and medalist, one of the most important and prolific sculptors of the Wilhelmine era. After completing his training in Znaim, Lederer settled in Berlin in 1895 as a freelance sculptor and created important monuments, including the colossal Bismarck monument in Hamburg and the equestrian monument to Emperor Friedrich III. in Aachen. Vita:
German sculptor and medalist, one of the most important and prolific sculptors of the Wilhelmine era. After completing his training in Znaim, Lederer settled in Berlin in 1895 as a freelance sculptor and created important monuments, including the colossal Bismarck monument in Hamburg and the equestrian monument to Emperor Friedrich III. in Aachen.
