Edition Hilliard Collection. 1979. Bronze, patinated, marble column. Clock: H. 67 cm, marble column: H. 90 cm. Signed Ernst Fuchs, numbered copy 10/789, marked IWC International Watch Co. Schaffhausen, foundry stamp Venturi Arte. Marble column minimally chipped on the edge, patina slightly worn. A representation of time as 'day and night' in the form of the two-faced head of Janus: a female portrait as the face of the day, an enigmatic and sensual male visage representing the fantastical nature of the night. A spring-driven striking mechanism that powers the head of Janus. Half-hour and hour strikes on bells. Rotating bezel for 24 hours, featuring indices and Roman numerals with a hand; three winding holes on the side for the movement, the striking mechanism, and the time setting, as well as the striking mechanism; key-wound. Includes three keys, a water clock, and IWC instructions for operation - Painter, graphic artist and architect, one of the main exponents of Phantastic Realism. Already at the age of 16 he began studying at the Vienna academy, among others under A. Gütersloh, and as early as 1949 he had his first solo exhibition in Paris where he settled in 1950. In 1962 he returned to Vienna where he bought the Otto Wagner Mansions in 1972 that later became the Ernst Fuchs Museum. Mus.: Wien (Ernst-Fuchs-Mus.).

Vita:
