1964. Oil/canvas. 58 x 87 cm. On the reverse monogrammed W. B. and dated 64 as well as titled and numbered. Small retouchings. Relined to the margins. - Expressionist painter and graphic artist. B. first studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Essen, from 1915 after a short military service at the academies in Karlsruhe and Dresden, where he was a master student of K. Albiker. From 1924 to 1935 he lived in southern France, where he was in contact with G. Braque and Th. Mann, among others. After his return to Germany in 1937, he was ostracized as a 'degenerate' artist and retired to Tutzing. In 1952 he became a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy alongside E. Heckel. Vita:
