N. studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg, among others as pupil of K. Kluth. In 1965 he was co-founder of the artist's group ZEBRA, in 1967 he was awarded the Villa Massimo scholarship. 1985 to 2004 he was professor at the Kunsthochschule Kiel.
