Pyramid
Keith Haring (Reading/Pennsylvania 1958 - New York 1990)
Lot-No. 501
1989. Silk screen in colours/anodized aluminum. 103 x 145 cm. In acrylic box. On the reverse engraved signature and date K. Haring 89, numbered A.P. 3/6 and inscribed 'Editions Schellmann Munich New York'. In addition to the regular edition of 30 copies, there were very few prints for the artist and the printer. - A densely filled picture field with a wealth of figures and ornaments of varying sizes lends the composition life and dynamism. The strict juxtaposition, in which only a few lines intersect, and the reduction to two colors simultaneously create an impression of order. At the top of the pyramid, two people prostrate themselve, perhaps in worship, before a strange figure that could be imagined as a creator. In this act of artistic creation, Haring reflects on the divine act of creation, and the unusual pyramidal shape is no coincidence, alluding to the triangular eye of God. - Literature: One print of the edition is published in: Jörg Schellmann: Edition Schellmann 1969-2009, p. 146s, cat no. 20 - Provenance: Private collection Hamburg - American artist whose works are influenced by graffitis. H. began studying commercial art in 1976 but moved to New York in 1978 where he soon became famous for his figures developed from stick figures painted on walls and posters. As early as 1982 he exhibited at the Documenta 7, in 1983 at the Whitney Biennale. Since 1985 he started painting canvases. His iconic figures, reduced to the essential brought him worlwide popularity up to today. Mus.: New York (MoMA a. others), Berlin, Aachen, Cologne, Copenhagen, Antwerp, Sydney a. others.
