Inconspicuous rubbing. - Provenance: Collection of the painter Alfred East (1849-1913); to his widow; Graves Gallery, Birmingham; Christie's; most recently private collection, Schleswig-Holstein - French painter. G. learned painting in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and William Bouguereau and exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1867. In 1893, he became a member of the Legion of Honor.
