T. began studying medicine in Königsberg in 1937, but was drafted after the outbreak of World War II. Discharged because of his Jewish mother and persecuted by the Nazis, he spent the rest of the war period underground. Until 1950 he studied at the Munich Academy, in 1952 he became a member of the group ZEN 49, in 1951-53 he lived in Paris, and in 1959-81 he held a professorship at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin.
