Designed 1939. Bronze, brown patinated. H. 35 cm. Monogrammed ER, numbered copy 5/13, foundry mark GUSS STREHLE. Expressive depiction of a seated mother offering her child her breast - German sculptor and draughtswoman, leading representative of sculptural expressionism. She received her training in Würzburg, Munich and Darmstadt, was a student of Bernhard Hoetger and Hugo Lederer and successfully established herself in Berlin in the 1920s. Ostracized as a 'degenerate' artist in 1937 and banned from exhibiting, she returned to Germany in 1949 after years of exile and internment in Italy and lived in Mainz until her death.
