Studied architecture at the University of Florida until focussing primarily on painting. In the 1950s, he became a member of the abstract expressionist movement and went to Paris in the 1960s. On his return, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Peggy Guggenheim Award and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1973 to 1986.
