Vanitas still life

Master of the Vanitas Texts active in Madrid around 1650

Vanitas still life

Lot-No. 584

Proceeds : 5.700 €

Oil/canvas. 48 x 64,5 cm. Restored, relined. An hourglass, old books, reading glasses as a sign of age and the candle's fading wick all point to the passing of time and the transience of all things. In the image of the tilted mirror, the candle also appears to be falling over. The vanitas motif, in countless variations, was one of the most popular Baroque motifs throughout Europe. Death and transience were omnipresent, not least because of the Thirty Years' War. -
